RF Microneedling 101: Benefits, Results & What to Expect

RF microneedling is an option we offer for patients who want to tighten their skin or improve issues like rough texture or an uneven tone. There are many benefits to choosing RF microneedling, both because of how it improves the skin and in how the treatment is delivered. At Brandilyn’s Aesthetic Boutique in Newnan, we can help you better understand RF microneedling and what to expect during your appointment if you are unfamiliar with this cosmetic treatment.

What Is RF Microneedling?

RF microneedling combines two different types of skin-rejuvenation methods into a single treatment. The first technology is microneedling, which is performed with a device that has several rows of fine needles that puncture the skin and create microchannels. The second is radiofrequency, which uses heat energy to warm the skin and trigger a remodeling process. The depth of the needles and the intensity of the radiofrequency energy can both be adjusted to match your skin concerns.

How Does RF Micreedling Promote Collagen Production

When the microneedles perforate the skin, they do not cause significant damage. However, the microchannels are enough to trigger the body’s natural healing process, including the increase of collagen and elastin production in the area. These two proteins are important for keeping the skin firm and elastic, but their natural production slows progressively each year. Stimulating collagen can help the skin to look more youthful.

Radiofrequency energy also stimulates collagen and elastin production, while also promoting thermal coagulation of the existing protein fibers. When used on the skin, the device heats these fibers and causes them to contract slightly. The treatment provides some tightening right away, along with additional firming as the body produces collagen.

The Benefits

RF microneedling can improve several skin concerns that come with aging, past breakouts and sun damage. As collagen forms, it supports the surface of the skin and helps reduce wrinkles and tighten skin laxity. It can help with crepey skin or pores that have become more visible with time.

This treatment can also be an option if you are trying to find out how to get rid of acne scars. It is especially helpful for shallow scars that cause the surface of the skin to feel bumpy and irregular. It can also be the best treatment for hyperpigmentation for some people who may be more sensitive to laser treatments or chemical peels.

What to Expect

Assessing Your Skin

When you come in for your first appointment, we will get to know your skin and examine it closely to learn more about what you are hoping to improve. This may include evaluating texture, tone, laxity and areas of past scarring or pigmentation. Next, we will determine the most appropriate settings and depth for your treatment, which varies based on your skin type and concerns.

Numbing and Other Comfort Measures

We apply a topical numbing cream to the treatment area. This typically stays on for about 30 minutes so that your skin has time to desensitize. While this keeps you comfortable during your appointment, make sure to communicate any discomfort so we can make adjustments or give you a break.

What It Feels Like

Microneedling with RF feels different from standard microneedling because of the added heat component. Most patients describe a mild pressure or prickling sensation as the needles enter the skin, along with heat with each pulse. The sensation is manageable, and the numbing cream significantly reduces discomfort throughout the treatment.

Are Some Facial Areas More Sensitive?

Some areas of the face are naturally more sensitive due to thinner skin or proximity to bone. Around the mouth, under the eyes, and across the forehead are regions where you might feel more sensation during treatment. Our ability to adjust needle depth and intensity quickly helps us to customize how these areas are treated to keep you comfortable while still providing benefits and results for the treated area.

The Results

When Will You See Results?

Results from RF needling do not appear in full right away, since the treatment relies on your body’s natural healing and collagen regeneration. Some early improvements in texture or tightness may be visible within the first couple of weeks, especially as redness subsides and the skin starts to renew. More noticeable changes develop gradually over the course of 6 to 12 weeks as new collagen forms.

What Your Results May Look Like

Patients treated with radio frequency microneedling may notice firmer skin, reduced visibility of fine lines and a smoother surface overall. Improvements in acne scarring and pore size can become more noticeable with each treatment session. After a series of appointments, your skin should look more refined, and you should have a gradual return of structural support in areas that were thin or loose because of a loss of collagen.

Our RF Microneedling Device

We use the VirtueRF platform by Cartessa for our RF microneedling treatments. This device can be used on both facial and body areas and uses 36 gold-coated microneedles and adjustable depth settings to deliver heat into the skin. We can also switch between three different handpieces, SMART RF, DEEP RF, and EXACT RF, depending on the locations we are treating,  including the delicate areas like around the eyes or more resilient zones like the jawline or abdomen. It also has additional features that can boost the results of your treatment, like red and blue LED light to calm inflammation and limit surface bacteria.
